Tooling budget without false fixed prices

Injection Mold Cost: Key Pricing Factors

An injection mold quote is the result of a defined part, production target and acceptance scope. Geometry, steel, cavities, runner, actions, trials and delivery location must be reviewed together.

The Main Injection Mold Cost Drivers

Geometry

Part geometry

Undercuts, threads, deep ribs, thin walls, appearance zones and complex parting lines add design and machining work.

Construction

Steel and mold life

Steel choice follows resin wear, finish, corrosion risk, expected volume, maintenance and the agreed life target.

Output

Cavities and runner

More cavities can reduce part cost at volume but increase tool size, balance, hot-runner and validation requirements.

Mechanisms

Slides, lifters and inserts

Side actions and replaceable inserts solve geometry or service needs but add components, fitting and maintenance.

Approval

Trial and inspection

Sample quantities, molding settings, critical measurements and correction rounds should be explicit.

Delivery

Destination and handover

Local production, export tooling, spare parts, packaging and destination standards change the commercial scope.

Why a Drawing Changes the Quote

A photo can support an initial discussion, but final tooling cost normally needs a 3D model and a dimensioned drawing. The model reveals shutoffs, parting, ejection and machining volume; the drawing identifies tolerances, appearance and interfaces.

Project archives contain many quotation revisions because the resin, cavity count, finish, trial quantity or delivery assumption changed. We use those records to structure the input list, not to publish another buyer’s prices.

No universal price promise: this page intentionally avoids made-up price ranges. A low-cost simple tool and a validated export tool may share a part outline while having very different scope.

Related Cost Questions

Is the lowest mold quote the lowest total cost?
Not necessarily. Compare the included steel, components, runner, trial rounds, corrections, inspection, spares, documentation and delivery terms.
Can DFM reduce tooling cost?
Often. A parting-line change, reduced side action, simpler insert strategy or more realistic tolerance may remove unnecessary complexity.
Is mold cost included in part price?
It depends on the commercial agreement. Keep one-time tooling and recurring molded-part cost separate so both are comparable.
